Tips for Used Oil Management

Two hundred million gallons of used oil are improperly disposed of each year.
It takes 42 gallons of crude oil, but only 1 gallon of used oil, to produce 2.5 quarts of new, high-quality lubricating oil.
Label all containers and tanks as “Used Oil.”
Keep containers and tanks in good condition. Don’t allow tanks to rust, leak, or deteriorate.
Do not mix the oil disposal with anything else, such as antifreeze, solvent, or paint.
Do not use chlorinated spray cleaners or solvents. A small amount of chlorinated solvent will contaminate your used oil and result in your used oil being regulated as a hazardous waste.
Ensure any transporters hauling your used oil have a valid EPA ID number. Generators, collection centers, and aggregation points must use transporters with EPA ID numbers for shipping used oil off site.
