There are 550 million fluorescent and HID mercury containing lamps disposed of each year. This results in more than 30,000 pounds disposed of yearly in the United States. Businesses who trash their bulbs generate and create mercury vapor which rises into our atmosphere, falls back to earth through precipitation and contaminates our soil, groundwater, rivers and lakes.
